Programme of speakers for 2018 - 2019

14th January 2019  Tips and tricks and other secrets of the potting shed - Doug Stewart

Doug   never really made the decision to become a horticulturist, however plants have simply always been part of his life. At 13 he had a gardening round, and an allotment, supplying the local shop with vegetables & earning a little pocket money. After training as a professional horticulturist he worked in roles as diverse as cucumber and tomato lecturer, pumpkin producer, plant propagator, interior landscaper and garden designer. After over 20 years working at a leading land-based college as Head of Horticulture, he is now relishing the freedom of working as a freelance horticultural business consultant, speaker and trainer. The highlight of his week is co presenting The Great Outdoors, a two-hour gardening phone in on BBC Radio Humberside, and visiting the BBC allotment where they trial new varieties of vegetables and fruit, and he says, drink far too much coffee…

Doug has been a regular speaker at ADHS, and is always knowledgeable and entertaining.

11th February 2019  Gardens of Marrakesh - Mary Swan

Mary is a garden designer and horticulturist who runs her own garden design business, Mary Swan Gardens, and also teaches and writes about garden design.  She's been an obsessive gardener since childhood, and her North Leeds garden includes a productive area with fruit trees, vegetable and cut flower beds and two greenhouses which are always full to overflowing, and a 100ft mixed border which she redesigned and replanted in 2017.  In her spare time, when she's not trying to keep the snails and weeds at bay in her own garden, Mary loves to visit gardens in the UK and abroad to understand how good garden design works in different situations.

11th March 2019  Woodland Trust - Derek Utley

Derek is a retired language teacher who enjoys outdoor activity, especially helping people in York and the north-east plant trees, as a member of Treemendous, a group of tree-loving volunteers supported by City of York Council, and as a volunteer worker for the Woodland Trust.

His talk will include the work of the trust, the value of trees, what is happening locally, and ways people might join in

8th April 2019  People, plants, pleasure and passion - Don Witton

Don is one of our regular speakers who last came to Adel in 2016. He has a wonderful Euphorbia collection which was featured on TV. This talk was written for the Hardy Plants Society’s 50th birthday, and contains funny people stories and fabulous plant images, classified into interesting themes. Pleasure and passion cannot be illustrated but permeates the whole talk.

Grow your own cut flowers-talk and demonstration - Gill Tompkinson
